Description Nico Kruber 2009-07-05 16:42:03 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.90)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

Sometimes my KWin gets into the state as if ALT was pressed, i.e. windows move when clicking somewhere and dragging them) and I cannot exit that state.
The only thing that keeps working is the task bar, but I cannot enter anything via keyboard. The keyboard is blocked in all the other windows, too - only things that do work is CTRL+ALT+F*, CTRL+ALT*BACKSPACE and similar shortcuts.
Logging out and back in again restores everything to normal.

I cannot really give a description on how to re-create that behaviour, buuuut this is what resulted in that state last time: I was hovering over an .mp4 file in Dolphin (it usually takes a very long time for dolphin to generate the tooltip (with no preview or thumbnail or similar) although a 5MB file limit for previews is set and video previews are not checked). While waiting, I hit F2 and changed to another window. This is when I could only move it instead of using that window :(

This bug has been annoying me for quite a while but as it is not easy to reproduce it, I haven't filed a bug-report yet - although I'm not quite sure whether that bug already existed in KDE 4.2

actually I'm now using 4.2.95 (4.3 RC1) but this version wasn't available in the drop-down list.

Did you check if sticky keys are enabled? Go to System Settings -> Accessibility and make sure sticky keys are disabled.

Sticky keys are disabled

if u understand that , the keys are working as there is "alt" is pressed. i.e.
"k" is working as "alt + k" .....etc etc....

then press "alt"....this will stop the combinating those keys with "alt"

I cannot undo this by just pressing ALT (unfortunately) - this is the first thing, I tried ;)

Although, I did not notice any app responding to any key press in the past, I'll check whether the shortcuts work, e.g. whether using F4 results in ALT+F4, next time that happens...

ok, this happened again just now, and although windows are moved as if ALT was pressed continuously, shortcuts do not work, i.e. pressing F4 does not result in a window getting closed.
