Previous version of Kmail provided option for "detailed new mail notifications" which, when activated, listed number of new messages and their folder as new email arrived.  Option is present under current version of Kmail but doesn't appear to work.  No popups appear as mail is received.

(Sigh)  Sincere apologies.  Problem traced to a configuration setting being borked in upgrade to KDE4 (user error).  

"Detailed Notifications" was selected in Settings->Configure Kmail.  But the actual notifications settings (Settings->Configure Notifications) were not migrated from KDE3 and I neglected to check them until now.  

Marking as RESOLVED//INVALID (because there's no "RESOLVED//PEBKAC" option).
