For mobile phones there are some applications (WeFi, EasyWifi and some more) which allow to determine hotspots from certain providers like Fon.com, t-mobile and automatically connect to them if you have an account there. I do not if there are open database whether to determine the hotspots. This would make it easier, otherwise kind of database could be created by users providing the recipies to Knewstuff.

May be this could be realised by gaining one of them (e.g. Fon) as sponsor? They run Ubuntu and have some developers who develop tools.
