I simply tried to attach a document to an e-mail (which is a response to an e-mail). During browsing for the document the application suddenly crashed. The error message read: "Kmail crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)"

If you can reproduce the crash at will, may you read http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports and post a complete backtrace here? 
You need to install the "kdepim4-debuginfo" package.
