Sentry Crash Report:

Description Marcello Maggioni 2009-05-08 12:03:53 UTC
Version: 4.2.3 (using Devel)
Compiler: GCC 4.4.0
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled sources

I'm using KDE 4.2.3 (I had to chose SVN because 4.2.3 still isn't there in the menu, but I'm using KDE 4.2.3) and QT 4.5.1 on Arch Linux and the RSSNOW has great problems .

Simply everything inside the widget frame isn't drawn , only the header logo.

All the Scroller objects (those that show the feed data on the applet) don't appear.

Seems an issue related to drawing children widgets by the Scroller objects. I tried tracking down the problem in the source code, but the Scroller objects use Animation code and I'm not used to that.

RSSNOW also had problem back when I was using KDE 4.2.2 and QT 4.5.0, but the Scrollers were visible . They had some rendering problems when hovering over with the mouse pointer.

Bye

Marcello

We've also received a downstream report at Kubuntu about this regression: https://launchpad.net/bugs/374143

plasma from kde 4.2 + qt 4.5.x == use at your own risk. we do not actively test that combination upstream, and we do not recommend that combination to downstreams ... i do know that this works with trunk (will be 4.3) + qt 4.5.1, however. if downstreams wish to ship kde 4.2 + qt 4.5, then they need to be prepared to do some extended testing; we simply do not have the resources upstream here to manage such a variety of combinations, which is why our recommendations in the matter were on the conservative side.

hopefully it all gets magically fixed for you when you get an upgrade to 4.3

So it's almost 3 months to get this fixed by KDE upgrade for Kubuntu?
RSSNow in KDE 4.2.2 + QT 4.5.0 worked without problems.
Comment 5 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-05-12 20:15:35 UTC
please don't look this direction; look at Qt Software for such changes (regressions even?) midstream and/or your distribution for shipping a combination that upstream neither actively tests or supports.

I apologise for such comment. I'm little angry because I've get some other nasty bugs in (K)ubuntu 9.04 which couldn't be easly fixed such as video driver/xorg instability. I apreciate the great work you do with QT and KDE. I don't know if I could live without KDE 4.x now :-)

Getting back from Qt 4.5.1 to Qt 4.5.0 from standard repositories in Kubuntu solves this problem for KDE 4.2.x.
Comment 11 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-05-13 23:56:33 UTC
thanks for testing that; 4.5.1 has had a few unfortunate regressions over 4.5.0. :( at least i know it all works in trunk with qt-copy all patched up for what 4.3 will be shipping with.

still, i'm sure it's a bit frustrating for you as a user as well. meh.
