Description skierpage 2009-05-05 01:04:06 UTC
Version: 1.2.1 (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I want to add a new document to Dolphin's File > Create New... menu. As far as I can see there's no help for this in KHelpCenter, no help in http://userbase.kde.org/Dolphin , no help in http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials/File_Management#Discover_Dolphin

I tried creating a file in the empty ~/Templates that Kubuntu 9.04 gave me, that had no effect.

Screwing around with strace, I found I could (as root) modify the files in usr/share/templates/.source/ to create different default files, but adding new files did nothing. Dolphin also monitors ~/.kde/share/templates , but putting files in here also did nothing. http://forum.kde.org/customizing-create-new-menu-t-36907.html suggests you need to add a .desktop folder as well.

Please document this in the handbook, even if it's a negative declaration, e.g. "Adding new templates to the Create New... menu currently requires advanced system administration. Dolphin does not use the Templates folder."

Check this out [1], new templates can be done :)

But I will fix it in kubuntu docs. and discuss about it on the kde docs. mailing list.

I'm submitting this as a task for Google Code-In.

That URL requires a login.

Did you? Doesn't look like it.

AFAICT it's still not documented. I tried the steps in https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=224 adapted for KDE Frameworks 5 : `kf5-config --path templates` to determine the directory, create it with `mkdir $HOME/.local/share/templates`, create a .desktop file in there with Type=Link similar to the ones in /usr/share/templates, restart Dolphin, ... and it worked!

Can @justin.zobel or someone unassign this (and bug 140102) from @tchollingsworth ? There has been no progress since 2011.
