Version:           1.11.2 (using 4.2.2 (KDE 4.2.2), Debian packages)

When I press the close button (top right) kmail quits.
It used to stay in system tray in the past.
Also, when the kmail is open the incoming message widget says "No running messaging application found".

Please check your kmail configuration -> Appearance -> System Tray.
