I did the same thing and it crashed here too with Gentoo KDE 4.3.1 packages. But there are a gazillion of other reports about crashes when editing toolbars. Is this still an issue in KDE v.4.7.4 or higher ? I cannot reproduce with KDE 4.9. It simply replaces one of the address bars with a button called, "Location Bar".
