OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.27-14-generic

This is common on my machine:

- I click shutdown/restart/logout in kickoff
- the screen fades to grey and shows the confirmation window
- I click the confirm button
- the screen switches back to full colour
- it takes about 15 seconds for the desktop to be replaced by a blank screen. Sometimes some windows disappear during the wait, but it is not obvious that shutdown/restart/logout is happening.

I find this behaviour very frustrating as the machine gives no indication it is actually logging out. On occasion, I have clicked cancel by accident or clicked outside the confirmation window (this closes it) when logging out. I then wait and wait, then try the logout process again. This is very annoying when you're trying to logout in a hurry. I also use a shortcut key for logging out. When I hit the right combination, I'm given no indication it actually worked and the machine is logging out.

Suggested solution:
Display a passive pop-up message that says that shutdown/logout/restart has begun, the same way a message appears when logging out is interrupted by an application.

It would be nice if the fade to grey stayed as logging out was happening as it's a bit weird how the colour comes back after confirming; fading to grey gives a satisfying "the machine is falling to sleep now" feeling. I understand this is a problem though when e.g. save dialogs can interrupt the process. Perhaps everything could be kept faded to grey except for dialogs that need confirmation (e.g. similar to how the root password window fades everything to grey).

I totally agree on this. The user definately needs some feedback, maybe even the splash appearing again like the startup but in reverse order?

What about those gtk apps staying open? Maybe this should be fixed too somehow.

What about a bouncing cursor as a feedback? Like when starting an application? Maybe showing the moon bouncing or something...

What about just showing a notification? Powerdevil does this too before the screen is locked...


PS: e17 and the android system do show an animation while logging out.

I checked with KDE 4.9.0 (openSuse 12.1) and after clicking "logout" the logout dialog immediately disappears and KDE is closed within 2 seconds, so I can not see a problem with this.
Please recheck if you still have this long delay (or describe when this delay happens, e.g. what apps are open, etc.)

This is still a valid bug/wish for KDE/Plasma 5. A notification of the sort 'Logging out, please wait …' is useful for new users IMO, so that they know the system is responding. My system, for instance, will take 30-60 sec from choosing 'Log out' until the user selection screen is shown.

Unfortunately it's not always so fast. Mostly the time between clicking logout and becoming logged out is negligible. However, in some cases it takes around 10-15 seconds or more on my machine.
Probably due to processes in the background which need to be terminated first.
However, this leaves the impression as if the logout had not been initiated. 

If there's some feedback or indication that the logout is progress and maybe additional information, which process/action slows it down, it would be huge improvement for the UX.
