When using kate for editing texts as a journalist, I am usually asked not to write more than a certain number of characters. 

I have not found any option to show the total number of characters (including blanks) or words. The ideal place would be the status line at the bottom.

Show number of characters in the status bar.

Add a label to the status bar that displays the number of
characters in the current document.

Also extend the context menu of the status bar with menu actions
to change the visibility of the status bar items.
