I think if the new and unread messages are in bold format by default, it gives a better look to kmail. Kmail is a good application but its look is still not very good than Evolution.

Do you know that you can configure them as you like? (except the font in the mail list, known bug).

Look at Settings|Configure kmail|Appareance|Fonts, mark use custom fonts, and choose the font you want for the mail state..
Same procedure for colors, in the Appareance|Colors.

Yes I Know it and actually it doesn't work but I wish the fonts in messages lists should be in bold by default becouse they seem much nice as it is in Evolution. I speak not very good english, I home i explained good what I would to say. I don't link the red color of new messages, I prefer bold font instead. 
I cannot change this in my kmail with kde 4.2
