There are several problems.  First and foremost:  If i set either kontact/mail to offline mode and then close it and try and reopen it, I usually get a crash.  this crash is certain if I shutdown the computer with Kontact in offline mode, In which case I also get a crash as it logs me out.

I can fix this by opening KMail, setting it to online mode (minor problem: it opens 2 windows saying kmail is in offline mode, do you want to be online?), then I close KMail and open kontact and it works fine, though it doesn't start in mail as it should. If I repeat this switching back and forth, the problem doesn't reappear until I turn off the computer with Kontact open again.  Attached is the backtrace, though most of it is unusable:

This backtrace appears to be of no use.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash.

I've had this problem for several updates, don't remember when/what version it started.
versions: using Kubuntu 4.2
Kontact 1.4
KMail 1.11.0
Akondai 1.1.0

Any other program versions needed?

This is an Akonadi bug already fixed for KDE4.2.1 :)
