I'm not sure, but I think it occurs when Kate crashes, for example after the NVidia drivers has frozen the system.

Nothing changes until KDE 4.2.4. The external modules are actually not loaded at all each time Kate restarts.

what do you mean by external modules? plugins / extensions?

I guess this is "plugins", the higher entry in the list. "External modules" is just the english translation of the french translation.

For example, I check the "Open headers" plugin. If I close Kate and reopen it again, "Open headers" is unchecked.
