Suddenly, I cannot see any name in the contact list. Surely it is not a font problem, as the numbers next to the group icons are shown.

Most likely you use not existing emoticons. Try to change it in Kopete configure dialog. IIRC this should be already fixed in KDE 4.2.

Solved. It really was an emoticon problem. I hope this could be solved automatically in the future (the default emoticon set should be selected if none is found).
