When the "choose application" or "browse file" window comes up in firefox and gimp (possibly other programs too) the window freezes, permanently. this is a major problem, because i can't change file associations or add personal security certificates in firefox and i can't save anything from gimp. occasionally the window doesn't freeze, but 90% of the time it does. i'm on kubuntu 8.10 and dolphin is my default file browser.

Are you using "kgtk" (for file dialogs) or "gtk-qt-engine" (for styles) ? If you do, try uninstalling them. Or ask for help in the (K)Ubuntu forums

GTK apps' dialogs aren't responsability of KDE.
