you can use the shortcut alt+shift+f12 to temporarily suspend compositing. That's a better choice than deactivating compositing completely. Same shortcut can be used to resume compositing. Might be related to bug 175454. I am sorry, I am not using the fglrx driver anymore and compositing with the free driver does not work yet. Feel free to close the bug, if you cannot reproduce it and no one else complained.
