I see the same behavior. Even after restarting and only selecting adept I get the same error. I've had ubuntu 8.10 running for less than two days. Everything was upgraded to the lastest after the install. No significant changes (eg compiler wasn't changed).

The same bug. Ubuntu 8.10. This problem appeared after updating. Now i cannot install or remove or update anything.

Most likely a dupe of bug 175540.
What happens if you try to update with apt-get update and apt-get upgrade?
