xserver crashes often when trying to change plasma/plasmoids/desktop settings.
I had this on 4.1.x and now on 4.2beta1 (4.1.80).
Kubuntu 8.10, 64bit, nvidia driver 177.80 and 180.11beta

Steps to reproduce:
- right click on desktop
- appearance settings
- wait a few seconds (or click on design select box)
-> crash

I once reported a similar (maybe the same) bug on launchpad, i dont know why i got more gdb output on that day:

According to your Xorg.0.log your crash is in the X driver for your video card. (Plasma can't crash X directly, but it can expose bugs in the video drivers.)

Just tested a bit further.
Disabling triplebuffer seems to solve the crash, so you seem to be right. Had that in my config since long time, as i read it should improve performance on nvidia cards (the old known issue, that should be gone now with actual drivers.)
But maybe that helps someone finding this bug report.
