Pressing the configured hotkey (usually ctrl+F8) does show the desktop grid. If you want to close the desktop grid without switching the desktop, you have to press the Escape key. 

IMHO it would be much more intuitiv (and faster) if you could press this same hotkey again for closing the grid. So you could keep the fingers on the ctrl+F8 keys to toggle between grid opened and closed.

Currently you switch to desktop 8 when pressing ctrl+F8 in the grid. Because you can get there also by pressing the 8 key only while being in the grid, it would not be a problem to change the ctrl+F8 behaviour the way as I described above.

This problem is already known, but no solution has been found yet.
