Variable Column Spacing in MS Windows Explorer
correct behavior in "File-> Open..."

Description Jeff Dooley 2008-11-16 21:07:07 UTC
Version:            (using KDE 4.1.3)
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Unlisted Binary Package

This is a similar request to Bug 165367, where ideally the behavior would mimic MS Windows List view, Gnome's new compact view, or even a bash ls command.

Column spacing is not positioned on a fixed length grid, but max filename length dictates column width. Columns are tighter for shorter filenames, and adjust automatically longer for longer filenames.

Thanks so much, though, for an overall stellar app!

Thanks for the feature request, but I'm a little bit unsure whether I understood your needs: AFAIK MS Windows List View, Gnome's compact view and the ls command don't adjust the width of the columns dynamically in the "compact view". I've attached a screenshot of Dolphin for KDE 4.2 - is that what you need?

Variable Column Spacing in MS Windows Explorer

This screen capture shows 2 different directories in MS Windows "List View." Explorer sets the column spacing dynamically where directories with long file names receive wide columns, and short file names receive short columns.

Thanks for the screenshot, I understood :-)

correct behavior in "File-> Open..."

Now that I'm loving KDE4 full time in 4.2, I've come to realize that the "File-> Open..." dialog boxes behave as expected. That's exactly what I'm looking for in Dolphin. THANKS!!
