Thanks for the feature request, but I'm a little bit unsure whether I understood your needs: AFAIK MS Windows List View, Gnome's compact view and the ls command don't adjust the width of the columns dynamically in the "compact view". I've attached a screenshot of Dolphin for KDE 4.2 - is that what you need? Created attachment 28625 [details]

Variable Column Spacing in MS Windows Explorer
This screen capture shows 2 different directories in MS Windows "List View." Explorer sets the column spacing dynamically where directories with long file names receive wide columns, and short file names receive short columns.

correct behavior in "File-> Open..."
Now that I'm loving KDE4 full time in 4.2, I've come to realize that the "File-> Open..." dialog boxes behave as expected. That's exactly what I'm looking for in Dolphin. THANKS!!
