Version:           ukendt (using 4.1.2 (KDE 4.1.2), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.24-16-generic

... which prevents me from disabling knotes, which i no longer wants as part of kontact.

kjots isn't present in the configuration dialog either, which is also a problem.

Is this still the case for you in kde 4.2? (It should be released in under a week, kubuntu has two options for testing this, either through a virtualbox image or through the repository listed on the home page).
