Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

I like to compare similar images at quite high zoom ratios (at 100% or close to that of the original frame) to assert the sharpness of relevant areas in series of similar images. Currently digikam 0.10.0 (beta 4) is always resizing to fit the image, which unfortunately is whoefully inadaequate to do any critical comparison of the image in question with the previous.

Why not to use Light Table to compare images ?

Comparing side by side isn't best solution for inspecting differences on pixel level. The best way is to quickly switch images to see differences in the same region. For example try to quickly check/uncheck Preview option in Gimp tools to see how image was changed or hover preview of effect in digiKam image plugins.

Accidentally you can achieve similar effect in LightRoom - but not by comparing images side-by-side but by changing images in right panel :)

Agreed, I have acquired the habit of shooting several images then comparing sharpness while zoomed in my camera; it would be very helpful to be able to lock zoom to do this while browsing in Digikam too.

No it isn't. You can close it, I have given up on digikam anyway...
