If LANG is not set to an UTF8 character-set bookmarks.xml file is not generated correctly. In this case e.g. German Umlauts are rendered wrong.

Slackware has UTF-8 disabled by default for compatibility reasons.

I can confirm this in the Polish iso-8859-2 locale. Editing any kfileplaces bookmark results in national characters being replaced with question marks because $KDEHOME/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml is overwritten with incorrectly encoded characters.

Just wondering... exactly how many "me too" comments from users does it take for a bug to be no longer considered "unconfirmed"?
