Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages

By default
Settings -> Configure -> Java -> Path to Java executable
shows 'java' (which would search $PATH I guess), still Konqueror refuses to load applets.

-(~:$)-> which java
/usr/bin/java

The fun part is: when you remove the 'a' and re-add it (i.e. trigger a configuration save to $KDEHOME) it will suddenly work.

Steps to reproduce:
1) create a test user OR nuke your konquerorrc and kill all konqueror instances
2) make sure a usable java executable is in your $PATH
3) go to http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/BarChart/example1.html
4) it most likely will complain and not load the applet
5) go to 'Settings -> Configure -> Java' and edit the java executable path in some way, so you can save the settings
6) click apply and ok
7) visit http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/BarChart/example1.html again
8) now it should show 4 fancy performance bars

Cannot reproduce. Are you sure the java plugins were detected before you visited the site ? That is Settings->Configure Konqueror->Plugins shows the java applet plugin ?

When using kjava the plugins are not used but kjava, or that is what I remember of.
