I have used some free planetarium packages. These packages represent the earth's shadow/umbra and penumbra region of earth shadow which falls on the ecliptic plane in form a dark patch. I hope this is only a simple implementation. With this new feature one can zoom in the sky map and observe the moon pass through the umbra region during lunar eclipse

This is really good idea, and should be pretty easy to implement.
