When I reply to an HTML email using an external editor (gvim), The complete HTML message is shown in the editor, including all HTML tags. This should be converted to plain text before being shown.

It sounds like you should be editing with an HTML editor. If the text is converted to plain text, then that is how it will be replied. There has been a strong backlash against Kmail in the past for replying to HTML mail in plain text.
