Version: 0.50.80 (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

It happens only sometimes, and I couldn't figure out under what circumstances.
Sometimes kopete is disconnected, and the bottom field where the service id/name should be is empty. kopete is offline and putting it to online doesn't work. It's generally reactive and it's possible to adjust options an the like, but it can't be closed. Killing it or waiting around 10 minutes and trying again "solves" the problem.

I think I know what you mean... I think I can reproduce with 4.1.0.
Open kopete normally, then go to file->quit, then reopen it. The window appears but with no system tray icon, no accounts available and it can't be closed using file->quit; and this repeats until you kill it.

Is that what you mean?

I think yes. I already uninstalled kde 4.1 because I ran into other bugs. Can't double check on it. But it is true, that it's always been working when first opened and not working okay subsequently.

This is because kopete doesn't actually quit if you go to file->quit. This is related to bug 167826.
