Version:           4:4.0.98-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa1 (using KDE 3.5.9)
OS:                Linux

* Go to Settings -> Configure Kiten...
* Untick 'Use preinstalled dictionary' on edict and kanjidic.
* Add /usr/share/edict /usr/share/compdic /usr/share/enamdict to the 'edict' tab.
* Add /usr/share/kanjidic to the 'kanjidic' tab.
* Click 'Apply' and 'OK'. Then restart Kiten (checked all the settings were there too).
* Search for '私' with 'Match Anywhere' option on yields no results.

All edict versions are 2007.09.14-1 according to aptitude, packaged by Ubuntu MOTO Developers. They all work in Kiten 3.

Oh, the Kiten version is 4:4.0.98-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa1

This bug is now fixed in the latest version of Kiten.
The cause was that once you added a new dictionary, Kiten didn't load it properly to search on it, now it works fine.
