NOTE: 
Reporting for the KWin version that is bundled with the OpenSuSE 11 DVD. The version that I selected from the pull-down menu (while navigating to this page) may not be correct!

Problem: 
As soon as I change my monitor's resolution, the system crashes, and an error window pops up informing that KWin has crashed. This happens consistently.

Additional notes:
1. This is a dual-boot PC, which has Windows XP SP-2 already installed.
2. The motherboard is Intel 915GAV. CPU= Pentium-4 3 GHz with HT. RAM=1 GHz.
3. I am actually trying to lower the resolution, because the display does not cover the screen.
4. The monitor is Compaq MV740.

I did NOT use KRANDR - I used the KDE's Start menu to change the display settings.
(Don't know if that uses KRADR behind the scenes.)

Please provide the backtrace from the crash.

Certainly. However, I do not know how to capture/retrieve the backtrace. Can you please point out the steps?
