Multiple redundant icons
Comment 2 Dotan Cohen 2008-07-08 20:20:10 UTC
In the screenshot it can be seen that Konsole, Konqueror, and Kontact are all shown twice.
Comment 3 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-07-09 03:17:33 UTC
.. because you have two different installations of .desktop files pointing to different places according to the system.
Comment 4 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-07-09 03:18:21 UTC
(and why are your BRs showing up as "New" versus "unconfirmed" exactly?)
Comment 5 Chani 2008-07-09 05:35:01 UTC
it would be nice to get extra info on these matches somehow. seeing two identical entries *is* confusing - it's happening for krita on my desktop system (maybe due to multiple kde versions installed?) and I can't see any way to figure out which is which. I also get two different konq entries with different icons (one web, one filemanagement), and I don't know why.
heck, I'd like more info on *all* matches, really. I assume that's going to happen eventually, and would probably solve the confusion here.
Comment 6 Dotan Cohen 2008-07-09 14:27:22 UTC
@Aaron: It does appear that I have KDE3 and KDE4 versions of these applications installed.

I don't know why my reports are showing up New instead of Unconfirmed. I assume that someone is confirming them? Actually, I do get a mail each time someone confirms, so there should be a record of who it was. If you are insinuating that I may have a sockpuppet account then I assure you that I don't. I can email you fwd the confirmation emails to your private address if you want confirmation that I'm not doing it myself.
Comment 7 Andreas Pakulat 2008-07-09 15:31:05 UTC
in general reports from "kde devs" are automatically confirmed and I think "kde dev" here means that person has rights to change the various fields in the report.
Comment 8 Dotan Cohen 2008-07-09 15:56:32 UTC
I'm no dev, not even aspiring! Other than a short C course in university and some playground php I really don't know a thing about programming. My BRs must be confirmed and for now on I will fwd to Aaron the confirmation mails.
Comment 9 Andreas Pakulat 2008-07-09 16:07:09 UTC
as I said "kde dev" just seems to mean you have more rights than "ordinary" accounts on bugs.kde.org. That is you can yourself change all the fields like version, priority, severity and so on.

And this particular bug had initially already the "NEW" state which indicates exactly that, that your account can not just create bugreports and close your own ones (as opposed to close any bugreport existing in the database).
Comment 10 Dotan Cohen 2008-07-09 22:12:09 UTC
Yes, it can be seen in Bug Activity (http://bugs.kde.org/show_activity.cgi?id=166079) that there was no change from Unconfirmed to New.

Back on topic: If it is detected that there are two versions of a program installed, is it best to show them both in Krunner or to only show the KDE4 (or latest) version?

A possible solution that I thought of would involve an extra configuration item for the Kmenu. In Kmenu one can add a Favorites flag to certain items. By default, this flag is place only on Konqueror, Dolphin, and System Settings. I propose another flag for being included in Krunner, which by default would be enabled for all items, but the user could unflag.

If Krunner is then already reading the flags from Kmenu, then Krunner could even be so nice as to propose the Favorite items before the non-Favorite items. I am certain that other advantages will be found as well.
Comment 11 Thomas Zander 2008-07-20 20:35:19 UTC
The full text description (on hover) now shows if the icon is from KDE3, fixing the confusion caused by having multiple version of the same app installed.
Comment 12 Dotan Cohen 2008-07-22 08:13:28 UTC
@Thomas:
I do not agree that the mouse hover fixes the confusion. Krunner is used in lieu of the mouse, so a mouse hover effect is not seen by many users. And even for mousemaids, there is no indication until they grab the mouse and hover over each item. The hover description is obviously not a solution. See my comment #10 for a proposed solution

Dothan, is this still an issue with the 4.3 redesign?

Yes, see Kontact twice in the screenshot.
Comment 15 Jacopo De Simoi 2010-01-09 19:03:28 UTC
Kontact indeed shows up twice, but here it's the only one which does, can you confirm?

If so, please change the title to "Kontact shows up twice in krunner results", so that I can more easily track the bug later.
Thanks!
Comment 16 Dotan Cohen 2010-01-09 21:38:21 UTC
You are right, I cannot find anything else that shows up twice. I am updating the title as per your request and if I find other apps that show up twice I will mention it here.

Thanks.

SVN commit 1072317 by cgiboudeaux:

Change the comment to 'Default KDE Kontact Component'.

This will disambiguate the krunner results when typing 'kontact'

BUG: 166079
MERGE: none (already in akonadi-ports)
