Version:           0.50.80 (using 4.00.84 (KDE 4.0.84 (KDE 4.1 >= 20080625), Eth-OS v1.0.0)
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.25-ARCH

Kopete shows empty groups and groups where all users are offline if:
1. select to show all users;
2. type some text in search panel;
3. select to not show all users;
4. clear search field.

confirmed  with Kopete 0.5.80, KDE 4.0.99 (Suse 11)

I can confirm that bug with Kopete 0.50.80 from Kubuntu packages.

I get the same behaviour with kopete 0.70.0 on kde 4.2 (Gentoo)

The only way to get rid of the empty group display after showing all users is to toggle show empty groups on and th en off again (ctrl + g twice)

Fixed in trunk (SVN commit 946606) will be in KDE 4.3. The search also searches in offline metacontacts so you don't have to press "show all users" anymore
