It would be interesting if it were possible to place widgets / plasmoids over several rows (or columns) on the horizontal (vertical) panels. For example by giving a "container widgets" in which it is possible to insert widgets and set the policy of positioning.

If so, there is already an applet being developed in playground by Sebastian Kügler to place plasmoids in a grid:
