The selection retangle works fine, but multiselection with ctrl-key or shift does not work.

Navigation with the cursor keys would be also a nice feature.

This behaviour isn't particular to Plasma. The feature that existed for KDE3 seems to not be included in either of the KDE apps - Dolphin and Konqueror won't allow you to do this either.

The 'product' this bug is written against should be changed to some more general term.

Multiple selection with CTRL+mouseclick (or CTRL+selection rectangle) has been fixed. Navigation with keyboard has been implemented too (jump to file pressing the first char is not yet implemented but it already exists a wish)
