Description monstermunch 2008-06-09 16:45:38 UTC
Version:           1.2.50 (using 4.00.80 (KDE 4.0.80 >= (KDE 4.1 Beta1), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.24-18-generic

I was looking at a page in akregator. When scrolling up/down with the mouse wheel, the scrolling is not smooth at all. For instance, scrolling for a second or two, you can see jerky movements and slight pauses when scrolling should have happened. The scroll speed is slow in that a mouse wheel flick starts a smooth scrolling animation that takes a long time to finish. This makes akregator fairly unusable for me as it makes browsing pages a pain.

If I open the same page in konqueror, I get nice smooth scrolling. This indicates to me that it is something wrong with akregator. Also, scrolling with the keys is smoother/faster than in akregator.

To try to make akregator usable for me, I tried to turn off smooth scrolling. I found no option for this in akregator and turning off smooth scrolling in konqueror did not do anything to akregator.

For reference (although I don't think there is anything special about this page; they all have the same jerky scrolling in akregator for me as far as I can tell), this page does what I describe above:

Does anyone else have this problem? I hope this doesn't sound silly, but it's practically the only thing stopping me from switching to KDE4. kmail, konqueror, kate, konsole and akregator are the applications I use 95% of the time.

Is there no .kde files I can add something to that will turn off smooth scrolling? Any solution that makes pages scroll someway that it's slow will fix this problem for me as I'm not that bothered about the smooth animation.

Same here. I was writing a bug for this, so, a vote for yours.

Smooth scrolling is not smooth if the card is not up to the task -- and recent cards too often have bad drivers...

The option to disable smooth scrolling should not be in konqueror settings anyway.

With smooth scrolling creeping in more and more widgets, it would be better to have an option in - say - the global style settings.

Anyway the same problem affects kmail too.

I said in my report that smooth scrolling was fine in konqueror but not in akregator for the same page so I don't see how this can be a driver issue.

I agree a global option would make the most sense.

I experience the same in KDE 4.1.1 with akregator 1.3.1

IMO Smooth scrolling should be configured in system-settings and then used by konqui, kmail, akregator, dolphin ...

This doesn't solve the problem with smooth scrolling but you can disable it in akregator if you add the line

SmoothScrolling=Disabled

in the section [HTML Settings] to the files "akregatorrc" and "kontaktrc" in .kde/share/config/

I agree, a global option would make sense for configuring this.

I can confirm that smooth scrolling is extremely slow. I could turn it off for Konqueror, but SmoothScrolling=Disabled as suggested in comment #7 does not work for Kontact nor Konsole. This is 4.1.3 on Gentoo (AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+, 2 GB RAM).

I confirm jerky "smooth scrolling" in Akregator in KDE 4.2.0, Kubuntu packages.

After a clean installation of kubuntu jaunty with kde 4.2.2 I had the same problem mainly in kmail, akregator and amarok. I updated xorg and the latest intel drivers and the problems disappeared.

I use intel 945 video card.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of akregator (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.08 or later), it gets closed in about three months.
Comment 12 Denis Kurz 2017-01-07 21:43:53 UTC
Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
