When using oxygen style with composite turned on ( with both kwin and compiz ), no shadows are drawn for menus. Other styles do not have this issue. I don't know whether this is a planned feature or not. If it is, it would be nice to have those shadows back.

SVN commit 817551 by lunakl:

Draw shadow for popups even if they have shape, they should be almost rectangular
anyway, so this is a workaround as long as there's no support for shadows for shaped windows.
