Of course I would opt for not having that checkbox enabled by default, but that's another bug. (bug 154855) I've had the same idea too :-) This could be the better solution! I agree that from a user perspective the best solution is to have this option, and for the box not to be checked. (See also http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154855 and http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161862). *** Bug 50446 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 194884 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Problem longer exists in KDE 4.6.3; the Previews tab now contains the following spinners: Do not create previews for Local files above: x MB Remote files above: y MB Should this report be closed now? No. It is still not possible to enable thumbnail creation for all pictures without setting some randomly high number for "MB". the latter indicates that the user still has to work around the bug and hence the bug still exists. There is no way to disable/enable thumbnail creation – one can only set a size limit – until there is a checkbox as described in comment 1. Resetting assignee to default as per bug #305719 The Local files above setting has been removed. Maximum file size is now up the thumbnailers but I do not know if these have implemented a size check already. (In reply to comment #10) > The Local files above setting has been removed. Why was the local files settings removed? Recently I have been downloading some heavy TIFF images re map data and even if my cursor stays on the filename a bit the whole system gets hanged temporarily because the app is trying to produce a thumbnail. It is not clear to me what you mean by "thumbnailer". Is there a separate application which creates the thumbnails where I have to go change the setting? IMO it is silly to have to go to another application to turn off previews within Dolphin. (In reply to comment #11) > It is not clear to me what you mean by "thumbnailer". A 'thumbnailer' is a small plugin that creates the previews for a specific file type. The author of this plugin should implement a file size check. (if that is the cause of your problem) If you want to turn .tiff previews off you can go to dolphin preview settings and uncheck image files. > Why was the local files settings removed?
Because it was wrong. For some file types the size doesn't matter because a preview can be generated very easy.

And even for images if a thumbnail is embedded, I guess. Anyhow, please indicate where in Dolphin settings I should go to configure the thumbnailer plugin to make it NOT produce thumbnails for images of more than a given size. I am not able to find any plugins pane in the Dolphin Settings window. Duplicate of https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154855, which is resolved in the latest versions of Dolphin. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 154855 *** |
