Description Yuri Pikin 2008-04-28 16:22:22 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.5.9)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

My notebook ASUS F3SR can`t restart and shutdown, because there is a black screen after logoff, so i can reboot only with 'shutdown -r now'. Logout doesn`t work too.
I use Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy with KDE 3.5.9
I can say that hibernate works well by clicking it`s button in logout menu.
I use ATI Drivers for Radeon 2400, so maybe it`s driver version 8.47.3 causes that problem.

I have this same problem. I use KDE 3.5.9, The Pardus 2008 distribution and an ATI Radeon 3200 video card.

This sounds like some application is blocking kde from successfull logout. This may not be a KDE problem. For (k)ubuntu, there is such problem reported in launchpad.
For Kubuntu please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/186713 and check whether this applicable for you.
No idead if that could be the problem on pardu too, but the kubuntu issue is regarding keytouchd, so maybe it's the same here.
If it's not keytouchd, please check for other running processes that may block the logout and try killing them.

I can confirm this problem. I checked and have no keytouch process hanged. I have an ATI Radeon 3870 running on Kubuntu 8.04.1.

I realised some popup windows appears during logout, asking for root-password to unmount 3 additional hard drives. I test logout unmounting these drives but the problem persist.

It is critic as the system hang completely. I am not able to switch to terminal-2 and login to force a reboot using command line. At present day I can only reboot system (not simple logout).

This bug is also known at the Ubuntu bug tracker:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/220102
According to comments on this report, the issue is caused by the ATI driver and is not related to KDE. A workaround is also provided in the comments.
