I'm experiencing the same issue. However I never activated the 'Configure Desktop' -> 'Behavior' -> 'Device Icons' -> 'Show Device Icons' feature. Usually HAL & DBUS provide me with an 'unmounted xy' icon for plugged-in devices anyway. The problem appeared right after upgrading from KDE 3.5.8 to 3.5.9 on my Gentoo system. Kdesktop is no more mantained. Fortunatly this bug seems not to be valid for KDE 4. Please reopen if this bug is not a kdesktop one (and it is not solved) or it can be reproduced on KDE 4. Thanks.
