Description Nicolas L. 2008-03-30 01:31:44 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.5.9)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs
OS: Linux

Mandriva BugReport : https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=39012

On a LAN with 2 machines running Mandriva with a french installation
From one of them access to the other with konqueror: ftp://login@host

The names of directories Vidéo (Video) and Téléchargement (download) are
shown as Vidéos and Téléchargement in the URL bar or in the list of
files.

If I change (Tools->Distant Charset) from "Default" to "utf8" the display is
correct.

In both PC (both using cooker) UTF-8 is used. Then ftp does not modify the
charset and we have one these cases:
- ftp tells to konqueror that datas are encoded in ascii or iso-8859-1
- konqueror does not detect the indication of encodage.
- ftp gives no indication about the encodage.

In the last case konqueror should use its own local encodage set by default.

IMO, during the transition between iso-8859 and utf-8 the behaviour was correct
but now, most of PC use utf-8 as default.

Thiago: you did the encoding plugin, IIRC, so I imagine you can comment on this.
Comment 2 Maksim Orlovich 2008-03-30 05:11:42 UTC
RFC2640 seems relevant, and it does seem to encourage UTF-8 --- of course, the degree of compliance is likely iffy, FTP being, well, FTP. It does offer a feature diagnosable by the 'feat' command, but doesn't seem like kio_ftp currently has 'feat' handling, and the parser doesn't seem friendly to adding that, either.

Comment 3 Thiago Macieira 2008-03-30 05:57:05 UTC
FTP doesn't say anything.

I forgot to change the default from Latin 1 to UTF-8. I'll do that somewhen...

Is this still relevant or applicable with KDE Frameworks 5.45?
