If you happen use thunar from XFCE, you will see that date of file display is shown as "today", "yesterday", "monday" etc, for the last 7 days. And normal DD/M/YYY HH:MM for the rest.
It's great to have this feature added to dolphin.
I too think it's not that hard to implement, right?

Thanks, I think this is a good idea. I'll discuss this with the kdelibs people, as the date format is not really handled inside Dolphin.

I prefer real dates to "fuzzy" dates but I see why some would find it useful

Would this be accepted as a configurable option?

For the suggestion; i personally wouldn't like the files i made "today" to have a "today" time.. i rather have something like gmail and gitweb with 1 min, 10 min, 1 hour, 1 day, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 days then the timestamp like it's now. 

The default preference would (in my opinion) be the "timestamp" dates for all files.

I like the original idea, but I'm always concerned about adding an option for each tiny feature where we are not able to decide which option is more suitable for the intended target user group (we cannot make happy 100 % of the users and options won't solve this). The code where this could be adjusted, is in KDirLister from kdelibs (David Faure is the maintainer), so before thinking about any options I think this should be discussed with David first.

It's currently possible to show dates in Relative and Absolute style(can be set in Settings)
