This is a forwarded report from Kubuntu (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde4libs/+bug/205937)

every time i open a TXT, PHP or other text file, dolphin opens a new Kate instance. Since Kate supports multiple files (on the contrary of kwrite), it should be opened on the same window.
Its the standard behavior in all previous versions of Kubuntu.
Comment 1 Pino Toscano 2008-03-24 12:46:22 UTC
I strongly disagree here, I don't want to have a single kate instance with many files that do not belong together.

... that is totally different than the standard *KDE* behaviour (guess what, yet another kubuntu patch).

... so if you want to file a report for this, file it with kubuntu :-)

To correct, make the command for kate 'kate --use', which will cause kate to open new files in the first exsisting instance.
