Version:           0.12.7 (using 3.5.9 "release 53.2" , openSUSE )
Compiler:          Target: i586-suse-linux
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.23.14-default

I turned on the plugin and enabled it in chat settings, however, messages directed towards me are not highlighted as per theme.

I don't understand exactly what you mean. What is not working? I've enabled Nick Highlighting in Chat settings and it's working fine both in KDE 3 and KDE 4 using several themes. Note that it does not highlight every message sent to you, just the ones where your nick name was actually written.

Highlighting works here to, using kopete 0.50.80 from KDE4.1RC1 Kubuntu packages
