I think tabs are a really great feature. I've often argued that tabs represent the document model of KDE.
There is one thing, though, that would make tabs even more useful: write a KTabbedDoccumentView for the KDE API. Here are some thoughts on why this could be really useful:

1: Advanced tab features throughout KDE. Tabs could be reordered or torn off. They could have close buttons and/or popup menus. Exposé-like features could be made available on supported hardware. The view could publish its documents to support third party window navigators. Consistent keyboard shortcuts.

2: Global configuration options. Users could select tabs, a dropdown menu or a sidebar. KDE for Mac users could opt to have tabs open in separate windows, or have the tabs appear left aligned for consistency with popular web browsers.

3: The tab metaphor would be allowed to evolve whitout developers needing to update their applications.

This is basically asking for the KWin tabbing feature which was in fact eventually implemented, but later removed for various reasons. Sorry. :(
