Hi, Thanks for your kind words and for submitting your thoughts about the future of Marble. The future of Marble depends mostly on contributions from users and developers. Right now we have only a few people working on Marble but I hope that this will improve over time. Personally I'd love to see historic maps in Marble to be distributed via our download feature. However somebody needs to search the internet for beautiful free historic maps that we can use and that we are able to distribute in terms of licenses and copyright. Right now we don't have anybody looking into this, so I don't expect this to get addressed until somebody feels that it's important enough to work on it. Thanks for your input :-) Torsten Hi, I just thought I'd send an update on this: http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Marble/HistoricalMaps Maybe you'd like to help us on this issue ... :-) Hello, Yes, I'm willing to help. Searching for mapamundi, I got maps like http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagen:1500_map_by_Juan_de_la_Cosa-North_up.jpg (1500) http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Kepler-world.jpg (1627) http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:FraMauroMap.jpg (1459) http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mapamundis_antiguos http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario:Manuel_Gonz%C3%A1lez_Olaechea_y_Franco/Galer%C3%ADa_de_mapas (some more mapamundis) http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario:Hispalois/mapas_antiguos http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:DeVirgaDetail.jpg (1411) And I have some doubts about this, because it is one of the most ancient maps, and is about all the known world at that moment by romans... but is not a world map. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabula_Peutingeriana And there are a lot of historical maps links at http://www.euratlas.com/atlastor.htm Best Regards. Hi, Great! Well, what is most interesting to us at the moment are maps which cover the whole map and which contain information about latitude and longitude (such as the map that is displayed on our wiki which is provided in globular projection). Also the copyright/terms of use needs to be checked. Additionally it's necessary to convert them to plate carrée projection (as e.g. described in the article). Especially if you helped with the latter that would be beneficial as I myself am busy enough with coding and can't do much beyond that. Thanks, Torsten Hi! Any news on this Jaime? Thanks. Hi, I can not check maps copyright, I'm not valid for this task. Also, as I said already in the mailing list, I can not manage the morph program . (Is it true that krita will include something to do this transformation?). Regards. Hi Jaime, Don't worry about it. Med just went through the bugs to figure out which ones are still valid (and he doesn't know about all the background of the bugs). I still have some historical maps to touch up which have already morphed and which still need some documentation and integration with GHNS. Will try to do that during the next week. Also there is a wiki now about historical maps. http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Marble/HistoricalMaps I still keep this bug open as a reminder. |
