This is a bug reported for Kubuntu using KDE4 (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/koffice2/+bug/180952)

I am using kword-kde4 version 1:1.9.96.0~svn757194-1ubuntu1.
When I open the document, font rendering in the document area is much worse than in OOo or KWord 1. It doesn't seem to respect system font hinting preferences at all.

I believe this is rather an issue of the original package than the integration into kubuntu.

Fixed upstream (well, its ongoing).
Remaining problems are in Qt and Freetype.
