Description Matteo Agostinelli 2008-01-11 12:15:43 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 4.0.0)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

I am experiencing rnadom system lockups when plasma is running. The only solution is a hard reset.

I know that plasma is the problem because I am also running a KDE3 session and I am able to run KDE4 application (KWin from KDE4 is working fine) but when I execute plasma it's just a matter of seconds/minutes before the system hangs.

I am using the Kubuntu latest packages (version 4.0.0) but I also compiled KDE4 from source and it behaves in the same way.

It's a kernel, driver or hardware problem if the system is locking up. Applications can't lock up the system on their own.

where to start ...

are you running with kwin compositing turned on?
is it an out of memory issue or a hardware lock up?
what graphics cards and driver are you using?
did this start at some point after usage or has it always been this way? in particular, were any non-default applets added to plasma? could you attach your plasma-appletsrc file to this BR?

In response to comment #2: I know, in fact I was in doubt to post this bug report. But since I'm running KDE3 without any lockups, I decided to do it anyway.

In response to comment #3: as for kwin compositing I tried turning it off but it makes no difference.
It's not an out of memeory issue and it has always been this way. I'm not using any non-default applet. I attached the requested file.

> But since I'm running KDE3 without any lockups

KDE3 is a different code base that exercises your hardware and its driver differently. =)

thanks for also answering my questions... well, except for one which now becomes really important given all your other answers =) and that is: what graphics card and driver?
Comment 7 Matteo Agostinelli 2008-01-13 10:25:13 UTC
oh sorry I forgot that: I have an Nvidia GeForce 6600GT and I am using the accelerated drivers, version 100.14.23.
Comment 8 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-01-13 12:12:00 UTC
could you update if you haven't to the latest version as found here http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html (they just released new drivers at the end of december)
Comment 9 Matteo Agostinelli 2008-01-13 14:40:20 UTC
Updated the drivers to latest version (169.07). Unfortunately nothing has changed.
Comment 10 Matteo Agostinelli 2008-01-19 16:29:13 UTC
Well I'm closing this BR since i'm not getting lockups anymore. It probably was an hardware related issue because I just extracted my video card, cleaned it and put it back. Now everything seems ok. Thanks to everyone for the help.
