Version:           1.9.6 (enterprise 0.20071123.740460) (using KDE 3.5.8-7.fc7 Fedora, Fedora release 7 (Moonshine))
Compiler:          Target: i386-redhat-linux

Until recently I was able to mark a message as <anything> I chose from the menu. Now after I have read a message and I want to mark it as new or unread it ignores my efforts.

I've tried both with the mouse and via the menu with the same result. This includes important and action item. I have a shortcut <Ctrl>+i which marks it as important which does not work either.

However if I try to mark a thread it takes just fine.

I've tried a number of different folders including the inbox. 

The change is fairly recent, probably inside two to four weeks.

Is this with local maildir folders, IMAP or disconnected IMAP?

There were some fixed for message marking after 20071123, you might try a newer version.

I have the same problem here!

Quick fix: the only way to mark/unmark a message is to double-click on a message and then use the "Message"::"Mark Message" menu. 

This is quite annoying (and the first time I feel like reporting a kmail bug since I started to use it, back in 2000... So it will tell you how much I used and like kmail!).

My version is also on KDE 3.5.8-7.fc7 Fedora

Compared to Steve, I also tried the "KDE-testing" repository for fedora to get the latest kdepim version. So the bug is also not fixed in this version :

This bug does not seem to be just fedora related as I also found this report :

(which seems to be for SUSE and kmail enterprise 20071210.746979)

Same thing is happening with newer version (from updates) 
KMail 1.9.6 enterprise 0.20071204.744707

Is there something we can do to get this fixed?

Please try a newer version, there have been some fixes in message marking recently.

Leave a comment (or reopen) here if new versions from SVN still don't work.

Should be fixed in enterprise rev. 770915 and in 3.5 branch rev. 770912.

After the last update of my system (fedora 7, kernel 2.6.23.15-80.fc7), the problem disappeared. 
I thus confirmed that this bug is fixed in KMail 1.9.9 (kde 3.5.9-4.fc7 Fedora)
