Whenever you try to type into the Dictionary applet, the textbox turns black and starts flickering about(Black then white and viceversa), after you finish typing, it either stays black or returns back to normal.

One more thing, the text box of that same applet is rather too long so that it is longer than the applet itself.

I don't get the issue described here, but the textbox acts very oddly, not showing text and changing size.  I don't think it's very well maintained.

The dictionary applet is very broken right now.  I changed the dictionary->applet communication and haven't ported the applet yet (since it is not being released with 4.0.0).  I plan to fix it soon though.

this is a driver issue (you're probably using nvidia binary drivers given the description; if so, they released a fix over the xmas holidays)
