The backtrace is not very useful, due to the lack of debugging symbols.

However, it seems to be an assert that is failing. Can you look for ASSERT in ~/.xsession-errors (it should be near the end just after the crash), and paste that line and the preceding dozen or so lines here?

Relevant snippet from .xsession-errors:

plasma(7259) Plasma::Containment::emitLaunchActivated:
Opening item with URL "/usr/lib/kde4/share/applications/kde4/kmix.desktop"
More than max services added. Removing "kde-adept_installer.desktop" from queue.
ASSERT: "d" in file /usr/lib/kde4/include/ksharedptr.h, line 114
Plasma crashed, attempting to automatically recover
kdeinit4: Got EXT_EXEC '/usr/lib/kde4/bin/kmix' from launcher.
kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kmix
klauncher(5528)/kio (KLauncher) KLauncher::processRequestReturn: "/usr/lib/kde4/bin/kmix" (pid 7319) up and running.

Interestingly, it executed the program despite the crash. I don't know whether the message about "More than max services added" is anything to do with it, or even where it comes from (it isn't in the style of a KDE debug line).

If only Ubuntu packaged debugging symbols with their KDE 4 installation. The ASSERT line is pretty useless, because KSharedPointer is used all over the place.

KDE4Daily is a really good way to test the latest KDE 4:

http://etotheipiplusone.com/kde4daily/docs/kde4daily.html

I don't know whether it will give you the same errors, though, since it's not directly on your system but in a virtual image.

this is already fixed in svn; it was broken code in the recently used apps model.
Comment 7 jofko 2007-12-16 22:29:22 UTC
Great, thanks

Comment 8 Alexander Romanenko 2008-01-13 03:06:50 UTC
I experience the same bug in the stable release 4.0.0
Comment 9 Jason Stubbs 2008-01-13 04:00:45 UTC
Alexander, it might be the same issue but it might be something different too. There's not really enough information on this bug to tell, so please open a new one and post the backtrace that you get.
Comment 10 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-01-13 06:14:45 UTC
Alexander: this bug was not resolved in 4.0.0 but only for 4.0.1 and beyond.
