Version:           3.5.7enterprise20070926 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages
OS:                Linux

The box cannot be erased. After 'desktop refresh' its content is cleand, but the box is still there, obstructing active windows in that area of the screen.
Closing your kde session is the only way out.

It is the pop-up that kmail displays on your screen, whenever a new mail has 
come.
You can activate that service:  kmail settings --> accounts  -->  modify  
Here you can check 'detailed new mail notification'
